The end is always near and never quite here. It opens with a government losing power on schedule, then scales up: a president draining of authority, Elizabeth I refusing to name a successor because people start walking toward whoever is next. Then the ending swallows everything — the Doomsday Clock, four centuries of failed apocalypses, Dürer's horsemen, Messiaen writing a quartet for the end of time in a POW camp.
