Progress, Not Regress

The instruments we invented to measure getting there. The progress bar, born in 1985, made computing bearable without making it faster; spinners, placebo buttons, lobby mirrors and loading-screen games do the rest of the managing. GDP, Gini and the Human Development Index do the same job for whole countries, and disagree about whether we are winning.
